Most often, your washtub basin or laundry tub is the source of the problem. A clog or partial blockage downstream from the floor drain and the laundry sink can be caused by a build-up of soap, fibers, or debris from the washing machine and whatever is dumped into the laundry tub.

If you experience a backup only when washing clothes, the pipe may be partially blocked, and the high volume of water will cause the basement floor drain to temporarily back up. This needs to be thoroughly cleaned before there is a complete blockage.
